“The Last Station” at Eckerd College on November 28

“The Last Station” is a biographical film about the last year of the life of Leo Tolstoy, being shown at Eckerd College the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The film shows the difficulties he was having with his wife Sofia at the time in Yasnaya Polyana, Tolstoy’s country estate. The film is less about Tolstoy’s literature, and more about the “Tolstoyans” who follow Tolstoy’s philosophical teachings, and the problems that this causes for his family happiness. Tolstoy is played by Christopher Plummer and Sofia is played by Helen Mirren. Both were nominated for Oscars for their performances.

The film will be shown in the Miller Auditorium at Eckerd College (4200 54th Avenue South) in St. Petersburg at 7:00pm on Sunday, November 28. The showing is free and open to the public. There will be a short introduction to the film by Professor Bill Parsons and a short discussion following the film for those interested.

Leo Tolstoy died in November 1910 at the RR Station of Astapovo in Southern Russia. On the 100th anniversary of his death we can watch an award-winning film about the author and his wife, Leo Tolstoy and Sofia, in 1910.
