Vladimir Nabokov is politically relevant again. In the last decade, the theme of immigration and dissent in Russia has become as important as it was half a century ago before the Soviet Iron Curtain fell in the late 1980s. Nabokov’s Western choice originated in his political circumstances—exile to Europe and then America after the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. His émigré status allowed him to take a literary journey from the closed nature of 19th century Russian literature and politics to an opposite extreme—openness of 20th century America.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, when the West came to Russia through the possibilities of travel and freedom, the cultures of foreign exile and the Russian inside managed to merge. The 20th century Nabokov, whose books taught how to live with liberty, promised to become the most important cultural and literary phenomenon for Russia in the 21st century. However, the increasingly stifling regime of Vladimir Putin shattered those hopes, bringing lessons of the post-1917 exile back to the fore.
Nina Khrushcheva is a professor of International Affairs at The New School in New York and a contributor to Project Syndicate: Association of Newspapers Around the World. Her articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, and other international publications. She is the author of several books including In Putin’s Footsteps: Searching for the Soul of an Empire Across Russia’s 11 Time Zones (2019) (co-authored) and Imagining Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics (2008). Her latest book (in Russian) is a biography of her great-grandfather, Nikita Khrushchev: An Outlier of the System (Diletant, 2024).

From Whence Came the Land of Rus? A Brief History of the Sources and Scholars of the Rus Primary Chronicle
An online lecture by Dr. Sean Griffin
The Rus Primary Chronicle is the earliest written history of the East Slavs, recounting the rise of the land of Rus from its origins to the early twelfth century. It contains many of the most famous passages from the medieval Slavic past, including the “Invitation to the Varangians”, the journey of Princess Olga to Constantinople, and the mass baptism of Rus in 988. But where did these ancient stories come from? Who compiled them and when? What source materials did the first Kyivan scribes have at their disposal and how did they use them? In this talk, I shall attempt to demystify the making of the Rus Primary Chronicle and recount how generations of scholars have attempted to understand this notoriously difficult text.
Sean Griffin is an Associate Professor of Russian in the Department of German and Russian at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on the history of the Orthodox Church and its role in the sacralization of political power: from the liturgy and chronicles of medieval Kyiv to the arthouse cinema and wartime propaganda of Putin’s Russia.
Griffin’s first book, The Liturgical Past in Byzantium and Early Rus, was published with Cambridge University Press. It was the winner of two international book awards: the W. Bruce Lincoln Book Prize and the Ecclesiastical History Society Book Prize. His newest book, Putin’s Holy War: Sacred Memory and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, will be published with Cornell University Press.

The Wizard of Music: Celebrating 180 Years of Rimsky-Korsakov
Best known for his masterpieces Scheherazade and Flight of the Bumblebee, as well as numerous operas, symphonic works, and art songs, Rimsky-Korsakov was a towering figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century music.
